Editorial standards & fragrance data methodology
Reliable fragrance information makes discovery more enjoyable and meaningful. Our goal is an informative, accessible, and continually improving fragrance database, and we would rather state our limits than overstate our certainty.
Fragrance information
We prioritize official manufacturer information when researching fragrance names, concentrations, note pyramids, and product details. Additional information may come from established fragrance databases, authorized retailers, and other relevant references.
Note pyramids
Top, heart, and base notes are recorded when published information supports those distinctions. When a source supplies only a general note list, we do not automatically assign those ingredients to specific pyramid layers. Conflicting or uncertain information is flagged for further review rather than resolved by guesswork.
Marketed gender versus scent profile
Where a house states who a fragrance is for, we show that as the marketed gender. The scent profile is a separate, algorithmic read of the notes, and it can differ from the marketing: a sweet men's release may read as having a softer profile. When the two disagree we show the marketed gender as the headline and do not present the algorithm's read as fact.
Layering recommendations
Spray Stacker uses available fragrance information to generate compatibility recommendations. These predictions are intended to help members explore potential combinations. A high compatibility score does not guarantee that two fragrances will smell good together, or that they will perform better when layered.
Scores are calculated from recorded notes, accords, concentrations, and structural roles. They are not laboratory measurements, and they are not proof that a combination has been physically tested.
Community content
Member-created stacks, discussions, ratings, and reviews reflect the views and experiences of their respective contributors. Algorithm-generated examples are labeled as such and are distinguished from combinations members have actually built and shared.
Authorship and dates
Guides and editorial pages carry an attribution and, where the content has changed, an update date. Founder-authored material is attributed to Daniel Beattie, Founder. Material prepared or reviewed through our editorial process is attributed to the Spray Stacker Editorial Team. We do not assign personal authorship to algorithmically generated fragrance profiles.
Corrections and updates
Fragrance information changes as new releases appear and additional sources become available. We welcome corrections supported by credible sources and work to improve inaccurate or incomplete catalog records. Use the contact form and choose Fragrance Catalog Correction so it reaches the right place.
Editorial independence
Fragrance recommendations are not represented as paid endorsements unless a commercial relationship exists and is appropriately disclosed. We do not invent customer reviews, testing results, fragrance notes, or product credentials.
